in home care

We know there are times when you need the services of McDowell Hospital at home. If a health condition, assistive care requirements or unique circumstances limit your mobility, we’re ready to help. Health professionals from the McDowell community are organized and prepared to deliver quality care in the comfort of your home.

McDowell Hospital’s Community Outreach Department offers a variety of services to help our home-bound neighbors. We also develop and manage programs to support the healthcare needs of new moms, children and all members of the community.

If you need help from one of our programs or would like more information, please call the Community Outreach Department at 828-659-5413.

Home-Based Programs

Home Care Agency

Certified nurse aides—supervised by a registered nurse—assist you with personal care and homemaking duties. Services may be reimbursed by Medicaid, Veterans Administration, Marion Senior Center, Workman’s Compensation or private insurance providers. The Home Care Agency participates in the Medicaid Community Alternative Program for Disabled Adults.

Caregiver Respite Program

We’ll provide a nurse aide to supervise loved ones over the age of 60 so that the primary caregiver can enjoy some personal time off.

Life Line

Personal Response and Support Services are offered to older adults and handicapped individuals living at home…providing quick assistance at the push of a button. The service is easy to use and offers assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Smart Start Funded Programs for New Moms

First Steps Program: A registered nurse visits after delivery to check how the mother and new baby are doing. This free program brings breast feeding assistance if necessary and a professional to answer any questions about postpartum and infant care. Please call 828-659-5415 to learn more about First Steps.

Healthy Start: For first-time moms, this program is designed to give support and information to the family. It begins after the baby’s birth and continues until the child is three years old. If you’d like to talk to a nurse about Healthy Start, please call 828-659-5427.

Community-Based Programs

Preschool Dental Program

A dentist and dental assistant visit child care centers, preschool programs and community events to provide a free, limited oral exam. After the exam, the dental assistant talks to families about any barriers that prevent them from obtaining dental services, such as financial assistance, transportation, locating a provider and interpreter services.

Children’s groups may request a dental assistant to provide education sessions to the children. These fun, interactive sessions use a special puppet to teach the children how to take care of their teeth. Please call 828-659-5413 to learn more about this program.

Community Flu Shots

The Outreach Department provides about 1,500 flu shots in the community each year at various sites, such as schools, churches, senior apartment complexes, senior meal sites and more. Call us if you’re interesting in assisting with, or organizing, a new site: 828-659-5413.
